The Citizen‑led renovation learner Collectif de la Roue has reached a major milestone in its journey towards supporting residents of the historic La Roue garden city in Brussels. In December 2025, the collective officially signed its European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) agreement, unlocking €3.78 million to finance renovation works for 36 households.

This long‑awaited funding marks a turning point for the neighbourhood, enabling deep energy renovation efforts that will directly benefit residents while contributing to Brussels’ broader climate and energy targets.

By signing the ERDF agreement, the Collectif de la Roue has committed to meeting several key performance objectives set by the European Union. These include:

  • Ensuring that 20% of all private dwellings located within the participating blocks undertake at least one energy performance improvement (EPB) measure.
  • Supporting 34 dwellings to achieve an upgrade of at least one energy efficiency class.
  • Delivering a collective energy consumption reduction of 708,706.1 kWh per year, coupled with a greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 146 tons of CO₂ annually.

These efforts aim to bring tangible benefits to the neighbourhood—lower energy bills, improved indoor comfort, and enhanced building quality—while also accelerating the city’s transition toward a more sustainable future.

The Collectif de la Roue and the residents participating in the renovation programme must reach these targets by 31 December 2029, marking the next four years as a crucial phase for planning, implementation, and community‑driven action.

With this renewed momentum, the Collectif de la Roue continues to demonstrate the power of citizen-led initiatives in driving meaningful change at the local level, showcasing how committed residents can contribute to climate neutrality, one renovated home at a time.
